DRAFT 2017.11

The Proto-Sinaitic Aleph Beth

The Proto-Sinaitic alphabet has 19 characters, a number which alludes to the moon's 19 year metonic cycle. Legends about the moon relate to writing in a number of ways:

  • The Egyptians believed that Thoth, the God of Wisdom, and God of the Moon, was also the inventor of writing.
  • The name Sinai is probably derived from Sin, the name of the god of the moon in the Mesopotamian theology of Assyria and Babylonia. Sin was the name of the moon god in pre-Islamic Arabic.
  • The name Sinai combines Sin, the Sumerian name of the Moon, and IAH, the Egyptian name of the Moon.
  • The Torah records that on Mount Sinai, God gave Moses tablets written with the finger of God.
