How can you tell if a person or machine really understands a language or is cleverly faking it?

This central question of philosophy, linguistics, and artificial intelligence has long defied solution. Much discussion has revolved around Searle's Chinese Room scenario and the Turing Test of successful human impersonation. It's been debated whether possessing consciousness and qualia (such as the specific OWWWW!!!! sensation you'd get if you smashed your thumb with a hammer) are necessary in order to engage the world intelligently.

Let's approach the problem by analogy. Is it necessary for two actors to genuinely be in love in order to perform the kiss of a romantic scene? No.

If actors are performing a love scene, mutual attraction makes their roles a pleasure, but theatre professionals know how to behave like they're in love even if they despise each other off stage! Is it necessary for a cowboy in a western movie to really die if his character gets shot? Likewise, no. The experience of pain or actual death is not required. The actor uses knowledge about what behaviors to perform to create a believable simulation of the situation.

The accomplished method actor strives to grasp and reflect the motivations of the character they are portraying. They get immersed in the new identity. Just as a comedian can impersonate a politician, or an insightful artist can give an animated character the mannerism details of a real person, a perceptive programmer can instruct a machine to simulate emotional responses and react cognitively to language in ways expected of a native speaker.

Understanding is a fabric. We will weave a tapestry of software, with fibers of information interconnecting concepts and rules. This process is entails intense reflection about the processes of thought, human values, and experiences like love, grief, and resilience.

The Digital Thought system is being devised to perform true language comprehension. It uses a dictionary with computational definitions which instruct how to appropriately activate processes and transform information in response to language. Like a glass box, you can look inside and see it working step by step. There is a diversity of ideas about meaning. People have different thoughts, opinions, and styles of thought. The transparency of this system allows it to be customized and cultivated in unique ways of understanding.
