Danda Stick Punctuation

Like a drum-stick which provides percussion and rhythm, the danda stick acts to divide verse in to sections, and indicate repetition. Shiva is envisioned as the divine drummer whose rhythms create Time and whose dance creates the world.

Figure 1. This is the Rosetta Stone of the Indus Script: the man, tree, and tiger seal. It is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Trapped in a tree by a wild tiger (a symbol of Shiva), Lubdhaka spends the night fasting, praying, and sprinkling holy Bael tree @ @ leaves on a sacred lingam stone. As a result of fulfilling this ritual on the holiest night of the year, he earns admission to the paradise abode of Shiva. The legend illustrates the importance of staying awake all night on this occasion, which commemorates the divine marriage of Shiva and Parvati.
