Letters have rotated over time. Writing method can influence optimal direction. If letters are chiseled in stone, the mallet might be held in the dominant (typically right) hand, and writing would proceed from right towards the midline, and further left.
In the beginning, writing was holy. It was a sacred, magical art. (That is why arrangement of letters is called spelling, it is said.) Communication was top down, gods to man.
